Jap

  • Japa
Japa is a training by which the ever-wandering mind is forced to behave in some order. In other words, Japa is a preparatory ground for the mind in fixing itself to a single line of thinking. Japa performed in the prayer room with all seriousness and intensity of purpose and training oneself to repeat mentally the name of God constantly in the wakeful hours, are the sure ways to develop “Bhakti”. If Japa is properly practiced and regularly pursued, it would prove very effective and healthy and will pave way for comfortable meditation. The effectiveness of Japa lies to a larger extent upon the spirit of surrender with which the seeker is practicing it.

    The Methods of ‘Japa’ (Chanting)

    · In Japa always try to establish a definite relationship between the sound symbol and the holy idea, so that the idea sprouts the very moment you touch the key of the sound symbol.

    · Use a rosary bead (preferable of 108 beads) made of ‘Rudraksha, Sandal wood or Crystal’ to count the number of chants.

    · Any mantra should be chanted at least 108 times everyday during morning and evening hours.

    · While doing ‘Japa’ the rosary bead should not hang below the navel. The energy of the body gets concentrated at the place till which it hangs.

    · For the best results always chant the mantra facing the east.

    · The rosary bead should not be visible to others so keep it inside a ‘Goumukhi’ (covered cloth)

    · While moving the beads, do not use your first and little finger. Only take the help of your thumb, second & third finger.

    · Chanting the ‘mantra’ should be from the navel and moving towards the center of the forehead.

    · When the mantra is chanted very fast, it helps to ward off sins. When the pace is medium, it fulfils worldly desires. When it is very slow, it assists in Spiritual advancement.

    Practical Suggestions for “Japa”

  • · While doing Japa, feel that the energy of the Divine Spirit is entering into your body from all quarters and making you Holy। This is the secret of the Mantra Yoga.
    · During ‘Japa’ restrict yourself getting into a drowsy state. You can take a few sips of water and sprinkle some of it in your eyes.

    · Try to tune your mind to the rhythm of the mantra. It will help you to carry your mind to higher planes. Do not let the rhythm break.

    · While repeating the holy name, try to dwell in its form. Visualize the sacred form in your mind and feel a strong bond with it. very time the mind wanders, let it run for some time and then bring it back to the anchor of your mantra very gradually.
